Our story
aThemes started with a simple observation: most WordPress business themes were either ugly and fast, or beautiful and bloated. We wanted to build themes that were both fast and credible — the kind of foundation a serious small business or freelancer could trust to win clients without dragging down PageSpeed scores or SEO.
Our flagship theme, Sydney, became one of the most popular free business themes on WordPress.org — currently used on 100,000+ active websites. Botiga followed for WooCommerce, engineered specifically for stores that need to load fast and convert. The Merchant plugin grew out of years of watching DTC clients bolt 10+ conversion plugins onto their stores and asking: why not one good one?
What we believe
The best WordPress products do three things well: they load fast, they don't lock you in, and they're maintained by humans who actually care when something breaks. Every product we ship is built to those standards.
We're also believers in giving away the genuinely useful core. Sydney, Botiga, Merchant, and aThemes Addons all have substantial free versions on WordPress.org — not crippleware, but real, complete software that runs full sites. Our Pro tiers add premium starter sites, advanced features, and direct support; we earn revenue because those upgrades are worth paying for, not because the free version is unusable.
Who uses our products
Sydney is the workhorse for service businesses, freelancers, agencies, consultancies, and professionals. Botiga powers WooCommerce stores from one-product brands to large multi-category retailers. Merchant adds conversion features to stores running essentially any modern WooCommerce theme. aThemes Addons supports Elementor users and agency builders who want one well-engineered widget pack instead of five.
Where we go from here
We're investing heavily in performance, accessibility, and conversion tooling — areas where WordPress as a platform has historically lagged. Our roadmap reflects that focus. If you want to follow along, the blog is where we publish updates and the contact page has our newsletter.
